As I'm inputting rosters on fantrax, we're running into an issue with position eligibility. On CBS the settings for hitters states, "Players are eligible at their primary position, plus positions they've played 20 games last year or 5 games this year."
The main thing of concern with that sentence is "primary position." This is something set by the people at CBS. I've noticed several players that are not eligible on Fantrax at CBS' "primary position". For example, on my team Miguel Cabrera is eligible at 3B on CBS even though he did not meet the 20 game plateau in 2014, because CBS still considers that his "primary position", which it obviously is not the case anymore. On Fantrax, Cabrera is not 3B eligible.
We need to make a decision whether to take a hard stance on the issue and only go by positional appearances/starts/relief appearances, or to allow CBS' "primary position" clause to transfer over for this season. There are a lot of instances of SP/RP eligibility not transferring over identically so this ruling will effect a lot of players/teams.
Even with having possibly the most important example, Cabrera, I am in favor of a hard stance and to not grant him the 3B eligibility that CBS would allow.
This should be an interesting discussion so let your voice be heard.

I agree with you Ryan. I'm really surprised we didn't have position eligibility covered in our bylaws, but I don't see anything there. (Guess we did just rely on what CBS had to say.)

Looking at league that I just joined on Fantrax, there are eligibility rules spelled out for how many games were played last year and current year, so we should be able to mimic our settings from CBS.
Cabrera lost 3B in CBS as well, it just shows that he is 3b eligible, if you actually click on the player he no longer shows 3b eligibility. I am not 100% sure, but the "primary position" thing may only effect rookies

I think Fantrax is just more up to date with next years eligibility and CBS always drags getting the players fully updated.
I would question why we say a batter needs 20 games last year and 5 games in current year, versus SP needing 5 games last/current and RP 10 games last/current. Seems like we are making it much easier for a batter to gain in season eligibility vs a pitcher, it will take a batter a week to gain another position, whereas a pitcher needs 5-6 weeks? Maybe we should address that

I can still move Cabrera in and out of the 3B slot on CBS...
Looks like we've opened up a can of worms with position eligibility in general.
I did mimic the settings on Fantrax, but the main thing is "primary position" CBS throws on players. That is what this is all about.

I am in favor of the hard stance. Ryan--CBS just hasn't made the transition to 2015 yet whereas Fantrax has. Take a look at my roster with all of the pitchers I have eligible as RPs that made 0 relief appearances last year and are clearly starting pitchers, but remain eligible at RP on CBS.

I think the hard stance is the way to go. But I do think that when the season starts, Cabrera would not have 3B eligibility on CBS. I've always known them to be a bit slow on that.
But regardless of which way we go, I would like to see my player's eligibility on Fantrax prior to the auction. I'm guessing that goes without saying. lol
As for the pitcher eligibility rules, I would keep them the same this season and put that in the back of our minds to kick about for next season.

CBS is just behind, in 30-40 days Miggy will no longer be able to be put at 3B, but if you left him there and never moved him he would be able to illegally stay at 3B, I have to go through all my leagues and move players off these positions once they update and it takes them forever, very annoying. If you click and player and get the pop up screen it will show where he is truly eligible.
I do not think we have opened a can of worms at all, just gone to a site that updates things in an appropriate manner, I think you misunderstand their use of "primary position" and are assuming that is hwy he shows 3b eligibility when in fact he does not have it. I believe they are just stating that the player has his primary position and in order to qualify for additional position these are the criteria that would allow it for past and current seasons.

I should have the rosters done in a few hours and then i'll send everyone the link to join.
It's very likely I misunderstood, (insert Whitney quote here).

Very proficient. You guys are doing a good job getting this transferred over in a very timely manner. You are to be congratulated. If you ever get down to Charleston, SC, let me know and I'll buy you a drink.

Eric, If you click on Smyly and Kelly they are only now SP eligible whereas Phelps maintains his dual eligibility. You can also go to player page and the eligibility tab is updated and accurate.
I think the only potential issues are players that are injured in previous year and do not play enough games to become eligible at a position and not sure how they determine where they are eligible at that point, it may default to previous position , but not 100% sure

Correct Boston--that's exactly what I was saying. Smyly and Kelly are not eligible as RPs, even though they are showing as such on CBS.

I agree with the hard stance. I believe when the league is renewed for the next season the roster would show up as illegal if you had Cabrera at 3b. I don't think the update is available on CBS until early February. There are a lot of things CBS does incorrectly and I wouldn't want them to determine position eligibility. I agree with someone, however, that primary position thing is principally intended for minor league players.

Thank you Ryan! He deserves all the credit on this one. He alone took the time to get all of the rosters and contracts switched over. Thanks again!
